What the painting shows

Flower Garden by Klimt presents a dense, ground-to-sky wall of blooming flowers without a visible horizon line. In the upper center, tall stalks of white blossoms rise over pale blue and green foliage. A wide mass of bright orange marigolds dominates the right side of the composition, punctuated by a small cluster of deep blue flowers.

Along the lower edge, purple, white, and red blooms dot the green grass. Klimt painted each flower head as a distinct dab or circle of color, turning the garden into a flat mosaic of pattern.

The story behind it

Gustav Klimt painted Flower Garden around 1905–1907 using oil on canvas. The work is also known under the title Cottage Garden. It belongs to Klimt’s group of landscapes and flowers and gardens, which also include his 1905 painting Cottage Garden and his 1911 work Cottage Garden with Cross.

Where to see it

Flower Garden is held in a private collection. Because the painting is privately owned, it is not on regular display in a public museum.

Choosing a print

Prints are printed and shipped by ArtsyWall in three formats: Premium Canvas, Framed Canvas and Archival Paper.

The Archival Paper format brings out the fine, individual brushstrokes in the white flower petals and the speckled background greenery. A Framed Canvas adds clean structure around the dense burst of orange and purple flowers, with floating frame finishes such as walnut, oak, gold, silver, black, or white. Premium Canvas provides a frameless gallery wrap that lets the vivid sea of color run straight to the edge of your wall.
