What the painting shows

Birch Forest by Klimt is an oil painting on a square canvas that fills your view with a dense stand of trees. Klimt does not show any open sky or distant horizon. Instead, the entire upper register of the canvas is occupied by tree trunks, green moss, and leafy foliage that extends beyond the top edge of the frame. This tight framing gives you the feeling of standing directly inside the autumn woods.

The ground takes up the lower two thirds of the composition, sloping gently downward toward you. Klimt covered the forest floor with thousands of tiny, dappled touches of paint representing fallen autumn leaves. These strokes range in tone from warm golden yellow and amber to copper, russet, and deep brown. Together, the flecks of paint form a textured carpet that stretches across the whole width of the picture.

Several birch trunks rise vertically through this leaf litter. In the foreground, slender white trunks display characteristic horizontal bark markings in pale gray, black, and silver. Beside them stand broader, older tree trunks. The bases of these heavier trees flare out into the soil, covered with thick patches of green and gray moss. The bark of the older trunks is rendered in muted bands of lavender, blue-gray, and pale brown, punctuated by dark knots and rough textures.

Toward the lower right corner, you can spot a small group of upright green stems with bright blue blossoms. These wildflowers introduce a cool accent against the surrounding sea of warm foliage and dead leaves. Further back, the birch trunks grow thinner and darker, receding into a shadowed, green-toned grove. You can compare this woodland view with other landscapes created by the artist.

The story behind it

Klimt painted Birch Forest, also known by its German title Birkenwald, in 1903. He executed the piece in oil on canvas, choosing a square format measuring 110.1 by 109.8 centimeters. Square compositions were a defining choice for Klimt during this phase, helping him treat natural subjects as structured patterns rather than traditional perspective scenes.

The painting has a rich ownership history that includes both public museums and renowned private collectors. Records link the canvas to the Belvedere in Vienna as well as the collection of Paul G. Allen. Over the decades, collectors and scholars have recognized the canvas as an essential example of the artist’s work, which you can explore further among the catalog of every painting recorded from his career.

Birch Forest has also appeared at landmark auctions. In November 2006, the painting was sold at auction by Christie’s in New York. Later, on 9 November 2022, Christie’s in New York offered the canvas as part of the Paul G. Allen collection. At the date of that sale, Birch Forest ranked fifth among the most expensive paintings ever sold at auction. Because such major works rarely change hands, collectors researching the market often consult guides on how to buy an original Klimt.

Where to see it

Birch Forest is currently held in a private collection and is not on regular public display. The painting was previously associated with the Belvedere in Vienna before entering private hands.

Because the canvas was sold to an undisclosed buyer at the Christie’s auction in New York in November 2022, access depends on temporary loans to special exhibitions. Until it appears in a museum loan or public retrospective, you can view the piece through high-resolution catalog images and scholarly documentation.
