What the painting shows
Rosebushes under the Trees by Klimt fills almost the entire square canvas with the dense foliage of an apple orchard. Thick dabs of green, yellow, lavender, and soft blue form an expansive tree canopy that crowds out all but a tiny sliver of sky in the top right corner. Round fruits in warm yellow and orange glow across the leafy branches.
Near the bottom, slender tree trunks rise from a bright green lawn. Clusters of pale pink and white roses grow upward on delicate bushes beneath the canopy, creating a patterned mosaic of floral blooms. Klimt signed the lower left corner in neat block letters.
The story behind it
Klimt painted the square oil painting in 1905, creating one of his notable landscapes focused entirely on nature. The work belongs to his series of flowers and gardens, where decorative texture and nature take center stage.
In 2022, France’s National Assembly approved the restitution of the painting to the heirs of Nora Stiasny. The artwork had previously been confused with another Klimt painting, Apple Tree II.
Where to see it
Rosebushes under the Trees is currently held in a private collection. Because the painting is privately owned, it is not on regular public museum display.
Choosing a print
Prints are printed and shipped by ArtsyWall in three formats: Premium Canvas, Framed Canvas, and Archival Paper.
- Premium Canvas reproduces the rich oil surface of the original painting on hand-stretched canvas. It arrives ready to hang with a sawtooth hanger, giving you an unframed, edge-to-edge look.
- Framed Canvas encases the stretched canvas inside a wood floating frame. Choose from six finishes, including warm walnut, oak, gold, silver, black, or white, to highlight the cool greens or the pale floral tones. It arrives ready to hang with an attached wire.
- Archival Paper offers a textured, matte cotton rag finish with a fine watercolor feel. This format suits custom framing behind glass to showcase the tiny dabs of paint in the tree leaves and rose petals.
