What the painting shows
After the Rain by Klimt is an 1898 oil painting of chickens wandering across a damp orchard meadow. Klimt chose an upright format measuring 80 by 40 centimeters, creating a narrow vertical composition that emphasizes both the ground and the tall trees above.
In the foreground, small pink wildflowers dot a lush green lawn. Several white, gray, and black chickens forage throughout the grass, their feathers painted with loose, soft brushstrokes. Slender tree trunks rise vertically through the center and left side of the scene, showing wet bark in shades of brown, gray, and dull red. Thin wooden stakes prop up younger trees near the center. In the distance, low hills sit beneath a soft, hazy sky. Klimt placed his signature in block letters in the bottom right corner.
