What the painting shows
Avenue to Schloss Kammer by Klimt depicts a tree-lined lane leading toward a yellow building. Two dense rows of tall, pollarded trees border a pale ground that extends back from the lower edge of the canvas. Their curving, knotted trunks rise along both sides, while heavy crowns of green foliage arch overhead to frame the center.
Klimt built the foliage and bark using short, dense dabs of green, turquoise, blue and yellow paint. Tiny flecks of white and soft pink appear scattered through the greens and along the path. In the background sits the yellow facade of Schloss Kammer, featuring dark windows and a central entrance surrounded by thick ivy. The composition uses a square format where the natural canopy fills most of the surface.
The story behind it
Klimt painted this scene around 1912 as an oil on canvas measuring 110 by 110 cm. The work is also known as Avenue in the Park of Schloss Kammer or Allee vor Schloss Kammer. It forms part of the artist’s celebrated landscapes created in the lake region of Austria.
The picture belongs to the group of works painted during his stays by the water. You can learn more about these summer subjects in our guide to Klimt’s landscapes and the Attersee.
Where to see it
The original painting hangs in the collection of the Belvedere in Vienna. The museum holds several of Klimt’s square canvases, cataloging this piece under the title Avenue in the Park of Schloss Kammer.
Choosing a print
Our prints are printed and shipped by ArtsyWall in three options:
- Premium Canvas: The image wraps around the edges of the stretched canvas, giving an open look that suits the rich blues, greens and textured brushwork across the tree trunks.
- Framed Canvas: A solid wood floating frame surrounds the canvas with a slight reveal. A dark frame outlines the bright greens and the yellow castle facade, while a gold or wood finish warms the park scene.
- Archival Paper: Smooth cotton rag displays the clear flecks of paint and fine lines in the branches, ready for you to place inside your own glass frame.
