What the painting shows

Litzlberg on the Attersee by Klimt is a square oil painting from around 1914–1915 that depicts the wooded slopes rising above Lake Attersee. Along the lower edge, lake water reflects a row of farm buildings and village houses with white facades, dark timbers, and orange-red roofs. A soft green hill rises just behind the buildings on the left.

Above the houses, a massive hillside fills almost the entire composition. Klimt applied small, rhythmic dabs of green, turquoise, deep blue, and pale yellow to create the dense canopy of trees. High up the slope, an open patch of light green pasture interrupts the dense pattern of foliage, while a narrow strip of sky appears at the very top edge.

The story behind it

Klimt created this painting as part of his long-running group of Klimt’s landscapes and the Attersee. Although inspired by his summer holidays at the lake, Klimt painted the work in his Vienna studio on Feldmühlgasse after returning home. Sources record slight differences in its date: German records place the work around 1915, while Wikidata lists 1914.

Where to see it

Litzlberg on the Attersee is held in a private collection, so you cannot see it on regular museum display. An auction in New York handled the transfer of the canvas in November 2011. Since that sale, the painting has stayed in private hands, making in-person viewing dependent on special exhibitions.

Choosing a print

Prints of Litzlberg on the Attersee are printed and shipped by ArtsyWall in three formats: Premium Canvas, Framed Canvas, and Archival Paper. Premium Canvas wraps the edge around wood stretcher bars, offering a frameless display that keeps the focus entirely on Klimt’s mosaic-like brush marks. Framed Canvas places the canvas in a wood floating frame, with finishes including black, white, gold, silver, walnut, and oak to complement the earthy greens and warm roof tones. Archival Paper offers a matte finish on cotton rag, suited for custom framing under glass. You can also explore our wider collection of landscapes for complementary nature scenes.

Litzlberg on the Attersee by Gustav Klimt measures 110 by 110 centimeters. Klimt applied oil paint to a square canvas, framing the scene with equal height and width.
