What the painting shows

Forester’s House in Weissenbach II (Garden) by Klimt presents the front facade of a rural house almost entirely covered by creeping ivy. Dense green leaves spread across the light walls, framing several open windows that display colorful potted flowers on their sills. Beneath the ground-floor windows sits a teal garden bench flanked by two small folding chairs.

A patch of light-colored ground extends into the foreground, bordered by a green lawn dotted with yellow, pink, and white flower heads. Thick floral bushes rise on the left and right sides of the composition. Klimt placed his signature in small block letters near the bottom left corner against the pale path.

The story behind it

Klimt painted this square oil on canvas in 1914, sizing it at 110 by 110 centimeters. It is also known by the alternative title Das Haus von Guardaboschi. The painting belongs to the artist’s celebrated landscapes focused on nature and rural architecture.

The picture forms part of the group of landscapes painted at the Attersee, a lake region where Klimt regularly spent his summer months. Rather than depicting an open view of the water, he framed the forester’s home closely, turning the climbing foliage, window shutters, and foreground lawn into a flattened arrangement of color and texture.

Where to see it
