What the painting shows
Blooming Meadow by Klimt fills a square canvas with a field of wildflowers framed by fruit trees. You see a low bush centered in the immediate foreground, while a slender tree trunk on the left rises into a thick canopy of dark green foliage. In the middle ground, the meadow slopes gently upward toward a row of orchard trees in the background.
Klimt covered the green lawn with thousands of tiny, dabbed brushstrokes of violet, bright blue, pale pink, white, and yellow. Influenced by French Pointillism, the dabs build a flat surface where individual petals blend into a decorative field. The tree leaves repeat this mosaic effect in varying tones of olive, sage, and deep blue-green. Klimt placed the horizon line near the very top, revealing only small patches of pale sky through the upper branches.
The story behind it
Klimt painted the square oil painting around 1908. Between 1900 and 1916, he spent his summer retreats in the Salzkammergut region, where he focused on nature and produced many of his famous landscapes. During this period, his style became increasingly cropped and abstracted, transforming physical locations into flat arrangements of color and pattern. The magazine Art news considers this canvas to be among Klimt’s most innovative landscape works.
The painting has passed through several prominent collections. The painter Broncia Koller-Pinell and her husband Hugo Koller acquired it in 1928, and their children inherited it in 1949. Belvedere curator Alexander Klee confirmed this provenance in 2024 during exhibition research. Subsequent owners included dealer Franz Schebesta’s Erben in Vienna, Serge Sabarsky’s gallery in New York, and collector Leonard Lauder, who bought it in 1985.
Where to see it
Blooming Meadow is in a private collection, so it is not currently on permanent museum display. On September 18, 2025, the painting appeared at a Sotheby’s auction in New York, where it sold to a private collector as one of the highest-priced landscape paintings by Klimt.
