What the painting shows
Lady in White by Klimt presents a woman shown from the chest up, turning her head toward you with a soft smile. Her face features rosed cheeks, curved eyebrows, and a light bluish tone along her chin and cheek. She wears her dark auburn hair piled high, contrasting with the dark green and black background behind her.
A loose, textured cloak in shades of white, soft grey, lavender, and hints of ochre drapes over her shoulder. Klimt applied the paint with visible, dappled brush marks that give the garment a soft surface. The left side of the composition fades into a pale vertical wash of cream, while the lower left corner bears the artist’s estate stamp.
The story behind it
Klimt painted this work in 1917–1918, during the final year of his life. Known also as Dame in Weiß, it belongs among the artist’s late portraits. The square format measures 70 by 70 cm. Because Klimt died in 1918, works from this late period show his direct painting method and loose brushwork before any final polish.
Where to see it
You can see Lady in White in the collection of the Belvedere in Vienna, Austria. The museum holds an extensive group of his works, making it a key stop on our guide to where to see Klimt paintings.
Choosing a print
Prints of Lady in White are printed and shipped by ArtsyWall in three formats: Premium Canvas, Framed Canvas, and Archival Paper.
Framed Canvas gives the portrait a finished gallery presentation. A wood floating frame in black, walnut, or oak highlights the deep dark background and cleanly defines the edges of the square composition.
Premium Canvas suits a modern room without a frame. The taut canvas displays the visible weave and brushmarks across the woman’s textured cloak.
Archival Paper works best if you plan to choose your own custom frame and mat. The cotton surface brings out the delicate pastel tones in her face, the soft touches of lavender in her gown, and the pale wash along the left edge.
