What the painting shows

Old Italian Art by Klimt is a mural painted in oil on plaster across a staircase spandrel and intercolumniation. In the left spandrel, you see a young man in black clothes leaning against the curved arcade. He holds an open book but turns his head toward the right spandrel to watch a woman standing opposite him. Three haloed angel heads and floral garlands sit along a frieze above him.

In the right spandrel, the woman leans against the arch in a gown filled with gold patterns. She raises her right hand with a pointing index finger, holds a lily branch in her left hand, and stands beside a red-winged cherub. Nearby in the intercolumniation, a haloed boy angel with a slipping white robe holds a golden horse-head shield in front of a dark bust of Dante Alighieri.

The story behind it

The bust of Dante shows that this composition draws from literary history. Art historians interpret the youth as Dante and the woman as Beatrice descending to guide him through Paradise. Beatrice, the cherub, and the boy angel look downward from their celestial space. The cherub’s red wings can be read as a sign of love, the lily marks purity, and the Medici shield references the Florentine patrons of Dante’s home city.

The mural belongs to Klimt’s early works and forms part of a wider decorative cycle of historical allegories. Klimt took inspiration from Renaissance paintings at the Vienna Academy gallery, including Marco Palmezzano’s Portrait of a Young Man. By flattening Beatrice’s patterned gown against her three-dimensional face and hands, Klimt created an early prototype for his later decorative style.

Where to see it

You can view Old Italian Art in the staircase of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. It occupies a spandrel and intercolumniation on the right side of the north wall, alongside other historical murals by Klimt.
