What the painting shows

The Golden Knight by Gustav Klimt is an oil painting completed in 1903. Also known by the title Life Is a Struggle, the picture presents an armed rider moving through a stylized landscape.

A knight dressed in bright gold plate armor sits on a powerful black horse facing to the left. The rider holds an upright lance and wears a helmet with a patterned, diamond-tiled brim in red, black, and white. Geometric patterns of black, white, and gold decorate the horse’s harness and reins. The horse lifts its front left leg, striding across a low strip of meadow dotted with tiny blue, yellow, and white flowers.

Behind the rider, the background forms a dense wall of dark green foliage filled with small golden flecks and pale, circular flowers. A textured tree trunk stands behind the horse’s body. Across the very bottom of the canvas runs a border of shimmering gold blocks, grounding the figure within Klimt’s decorative visual world.

The story behind it

Klimt painted this work in 1903, assigning it the German title Der Goldene Ritter, as well as Das Leben ist ein Kampf. The painting belongs to Klimt’s allegories, depicting human perseverance through the figure of an armored champion.

It also marks an important entry in his gold period. Klimt used oil paint alongside extensive gilding on the knight’s armor and the decorative border below, combining figurative painting with flat decorative surfaces.
