What the painting shows

Tranquil Pond by Klimt depicts a quiet body of water reflecting the trees and sky. The lower two thirds of the canvas show the pond surface, split between dark reddish-brown water on the left and bright pale blue and white sky reflections on the right.

Along the far shore sits a strip of green grass. A thick, dark cluster of trees rises on the upper left, while a small stand of tall pine trees rests on a knoll to the right. Ripples across the water softly break up the mirrored tree trunks and clouds.

The story behind it

Klimt painted the oil on canvas work in 1899. The painting is also known by other titles, including A Morning by the Pond, Egelsee near Golling, and Stiller Weiher. It belongs to Klimt’s early series of landscapes.
