What the painting shows

Schloss Kammer on the Attersee IV by Klimt depicts the yellow facade of Castle Kammer standing above the water. A clock tower tops the steep roofline, while shuttered windows dot the upper stories of the building. Deep green foliage and rounded bushes line the shore beneath the manor, alongside beds of red, white, and purple blossoms.

The lower half of the composition belongs entirely to the lake surface. Thick, dabbed strokes of paint record the ripples on the water, reflecting the warm yellow walls, the arched windows, and the dark green trees above. Klimt cropped the sky almost entirely, keeping your focus on the balance between the solid structure and its shifting reflection.

The story behind it

Klimt completed this painting in 1910 as part of his series of landscapes. It stands among the focused Klimt landscapes and the Attersee produced during his quiet summer working trips to the lake country. Klimt returned to the grounds of Schloss Kammer across multiple summers, observing the building across the water under changing conditions.
