What the painting shows

Litzlbergkeller on the Attersee by Klimt shows a white two-story building set among thick trees right along the water. Klimt painted the scene using oil on canvas, filling the composition from the reflective lake surface at the bottom to heavy foliage at the very top. You can see how the dark roof, shuttered windows, and wooden balcony of the house stand out against the pale walls. Dark rectangular openings and ground-level doors cut geometric shapes into the light facade.

Below the building, a green lawn slopes down toward the water. Klimt built up the grass using small brushstrokes of light green, yellow, and olive, dotting the ground with rounded shrubs that bear pink and white blossoms. Dense trees wrap around the building on every side, blocking out the sky with layered patches of emerald, turquoise, and navy blue. In the foreground, the lake reflects the trees and walls in vertical strokes of green and blue, with the artist’s signature resting in the lower left corner.

The story behind it

Klimt painted this work between 1915 and 1916. It forms part of the landscapes painted at the Attersee, which you can study in our guide to Klimt’s landscapes and the Attersee and compare with other landscapes. In this picture, Klimt built a compact view of the lakeshore, arranging the water, lawn, house, and woods into flat bands of color without including the sky.
