What the painting shows
Schloss Kammer on the Attersee II by Klimt presents Castle Kammer viewed through lush foliage, completed in 1909. In the upper half of the composition, the steep, dark roof and pale ornamental gables of the castle rise above thick tree canopies.
Below the high roofline sits a long white building with dark windows, a doorway, and small flowerbeds lining the foundation. A broad lawn covers the foreground in bands of yellow, pale blue, and rich green paint. Five slender, upright shrubs stand spaced across the lower grass, while a tall tree rises along the left border. Klimt applied his paint in small, textured patches, flattening the perspective so the lakefront garden and the solid manor merge into a continuous pattern of color.
The story behind it
Klimt painted the canvas in 1909 as one of his Klimt’s landscapes and the Attersee. He spent his summer months at the lake, returning to the castle as a subject across different years.
The painting belongs to his wider group of landscapes, focusing on rural Austrian scenery. In various records, the work also appears under the titles Castle Kammer at Attersee II and Schloss Kammer am Attersee II.
Where to see it
Schloss Kammer on the Attersee II is currently held in a private collection. Because it remains in private hands, the painting is not on permanent public display in any museum gallery.
